Artist Bio
My Pottery adventure started in the 70s in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I first put my hands in the clay and then quit my day job.😂 I actually apprenticed to a studio Potter, and when my daughter was born, I went back to my profession and had didn’t throw for 27 years till 2017, after retirement from university of Florida where I was clinical faculty.
I’m so incredibly thrilled to be working in clay again, and continue to learn and grow both here in Gainesville and in North Carolina.
Every pot I create is one at a time. No molds no jigs, no assistants doing part of the process for me. I have mixed every glaze, I load and unload every kiln. I pull every handle for every mug one at a time. No extruders. No mechanized automated systems for cranking out pieces of work. So every one that I make is an original. Every one gets handled 4 to 5 times by me. And now I am trying new techniques again -some with trendy new ideas from an age old glaze company. Every piece is assured to be food safe, and safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher
Each season I’m encouraged to stick with some of the old favorites and then try new techniques and new ideas. Having people come to the studio and ask for different things keeps me motivated to try(and sometimes fail) so that I keep growing in this limitless art form.
About the Studio
Home studio on (of course) the back porch
No a/c or heat so dress for the weather. If it’s raining ☔️it’ll be more difficult to visit but still doable.
What to Expect
I will be throwing, using different colored clays, which is the most mesmerizing. I’ll demonstratehow to bubble glaze. And I will be making many small white vessels (tumblers, small bowls, and trinket dishes) if people want to try bubble glazing, and have the ability to pick their color and then dip in clear glaze and pick up in a couple of weeks for a minimal fee of $10. The bubble glazing adventure will be out in the tent. I did this in another studio tour and it was very successful. There will be opportunities to purchase finished work in the studio showroom.
Helpful Directions
IF you use your GPS to find the address. Make SURE to put in 18th PLACE. Our home is actually on 31 Terrace. You will see the studio tour sign on the street before you turn onto 18 place as we are at corner lot. Please come through the garden gate off the driveway to the back porch studio. You can watch the demo first, do some bubble glazing.
